Waste to Energy
Waste-to-Energy (WtE) offers Odisha a pathway to manage non-recyclable waste streams while generating useful energy. As urban centres grow and waste volumes increase, landfill-based disposal is becoming increasingly constrained due to land availability, environmental compliance, and public acceptance.
For Odisha, WtE is not a replacement for recycling or waste reduction. It is a complementary solution for handling residual waste that cannot be economically recycled, particularly in urban and industrial contexts.
The Odisha Cleantech Association (OCA) works to promote Waste-to-Energy solutions that are environmentally compliant, technically appropriate, and aligned with Odisha’s waste management and urban development priorities.
Waste-to-Energy Applications
WtE in Odisha is relevant across multiple applications:
Waste Landscape & WtE Relevance in Odisha
Odisha’s waste profile presents distinct challenges and opportunities:
Increasing municipal solid waste generation in urban areas
Mixed waste composition with variable calorific value
Limited availability of engineered landfill space
Need for improved segregation and processing infrastructure
WtE solutions, when properly integrated into the solid waste management hierarchy, can reduce landfill volumes, stabilise waste handling, and recover energy from residual waste streams.
OCA’s Focus – Waste-to-Energy
OCA supports the Waste-to-Energy ecosystem through structured engagement across policy, industry, and implementation:
