Biogas Energy

Biogas plays a critical role in Odisha’s clean energy and circular economy transition, particularly at the intersection of waste management, rural livelihoods, and decentralized energy systems.

With significant availability of agricultural residue, livestock waste, food waste, and organic municipal waste, Odisha has strong fundamentals for scaling biogas and biomethane solutions across rural, urban, and industrial settings. When designed and operated correctly, biogas systems offer dual benefits: renewable energy generation and effective organic waste management.

For Odisha, biogas is not just an energy solution. It is an infrastructure tool that supports sanitation, waste reduction, local employment, and climate resilience.

The Odisha Cleantech Association (OCA) works to promote technically sound, economically viable, and locally relevant biogas deployment models aligned with state priorities and on-ground realities.

Odisha’s land availability, industrial base, port connectivity, and coastal geography create strong fundamentals for large-scale renewable deployment, hybrid projects, and future-ready grid infrastructure.

The Odisha Cleantech Association (OCA) works to ensure that renewable energy growth is technically robust, policy-aligned, and inclusive of local manufacturing, MSMEs, and talent.

Biogas Potential in Odisha

Odisha’s diverse feedstock base creates multiple biogas application pathways:

  • Agricultural residues and animal waste in rural and peri-urban regions

  • Organic waste from markets, institutions, hotels, and food processing units

  • Municipal organic waste streams in growing urban centres

  • Industrial biodegradable waste from agro-based and food industries

Decentralised and mid-scale biogas systems are particularly well-suited for Odisha, where transport of waste over long distances is often inefficient and costly. When integrated with local energy demand, fertilizer use, or bio-CNG applications, biogas systems can deliver strong environmental and economic outcomes.
